Canvasser
Cost: $10/hr + commission
How it works:
Canvassers are notorious in the solar energy sector. A canvasser is basically a door knocker who walks through neighborhoods and with a polished script, tries to set appointment for return salespeople. Using a canvasser is very effective if you find the right person but if you hire poorly… it will be a nightmare. Usually they are paid hourly plus a commission for sales and/or
appointments. You can decide for yourself which route you want to take. A decent canvasser with a list can set 2-5 appointments a weekend. Here are a few tips to help you:
Create a compensation package that motivates the canvasser to actually set appointment. If you don’t, they will sit around and smoke cigarettes while you pay them $10 an hour.
Pay commissions and incentives for sit down appointments and/or closes only. If the appointment falls through or a responsible party (spouse) is not present, it doesn’t count for commission. This compensation model motivates the canvasser to provide quality work.
Organize the knocking route for your canvasser so that they can focus on the appointment setting.
The primetime for canvasser knocking is after 5:00 PM and on weekends. These hours are a great start to see if you canvasser has what it takes to represent you.
Meet the canvasser and interview them in person before you offer them the job. Our market is sterotypically conservative and therefore, your employee should be clean cut, presentable, and have professional communication skills.
Possible Script:
"Hello, I'm looking for Tom. Hello, I'm Cody and here a couple of weeks ago we mailed out this card to you offering information about the supplement to social security death benefits program. We haven't recieved the card back yet but dropped by to let you know we will have a field underwriter in the neighborhood tomorrow and Friday going over the information and prequalifying people. Which day works best for you?"
